Makeup for photographs, and why it looks different on camera

Everyone has had the experience of leaving the house happy with their face and seeing the photographs afterwards. The makeup was not wrong. The camera is doing three things your mirror does not.
It flattens
A lens compresses depth. Contour that is subtle in three dimensions disappears in two, which is why makeup that looks slightly overdone in the mirror often photographs as normal. This is the one place where more is genuinely the right answer — a touch more definition under the cheekbone and along the jaw survives the flattening.
It exaggerates shine
Skin that reads as healthy glow in person reads as grease under a flash. The forehead, the nose and the chin are the culprits, because they are the parts angled towards the light. Powder there and only there. Powdering the whole face to solve a T-zone problem is what makes photographic makeup look like a mask.
Highlighter is the specific risk. Anything with visible particles catches a flash and turns into a bright patch with no shape.
It picks up red
Camera sensors are more sensitive to red than the eye, so any flush, any broken capillary, any irritation from waxing that morning comes back stronger in the picture. Colour-correcting before base, rather than piling coverage on top of it, is what keeps the skin looking like skin.
The flashback problem
If you have ever seen a photograph where your face is noticeably paler than your neck, that is SPF or a mineral filter in your base bouncing the flash back. It is invisible in daylight and brutal under a camera. For anything with a flash, keep sunscreen in your skincare and out of your foundation.
What not to change
Lip colour behaves much the same on camera as off. Brows do too. Resist the urge to darken everything — the parts that photograph well already are the parts you should leave alone.
