The mistake in a hurry is compression: doing everything you normally do, but quicker. It never works, because the steps that suffer under speed are the ones that need blending, and unblended makeup looks worse than none.
A short routine is a different routine. You are not trimming — you are choosing which three or four things carry the whole face.
What to keep
- Something that evens the skin, applied only where you need it
- Something on the cheeks, because colour reads as health from across a room
- Something on the lashes or brows, because they frame everything else
- A lip, which is the fastest step and the most visible
What to drop first
Contour, highlighter, eyeshadow beyond a single wash, setting powder over the whole face, and full-coverage base. Each of these takes time in proportion to how good it looks, and each of them looks obviously rushed when it is.
The order that saves the most time
Skin, then cheeks, then eyes, then lips. Doing the cheeks before the eyes means you are not working around wet mascara. Doing lips last means you are not eating them off while you concentrate.
Cream products are faster than powder because your fingers are faster than a brush and because cream blends into cream. A cream blush over a cream base takes ten seconds; a powder blush over the same base takes thirty and a brush you then have to clean.
The part people skip that costs them
Letting skincare settle. Base applied onto moisturiser that has not sunk in will slide, and you will spend the time you saved fixing it at eleven. Thirty seconds of waiting saves five minutes of repair.
