Wedding guest makeup that survives fourteen hours

A wedding is the hardest test a face gets: hours of it, indoor and outdoor light, photographs at the start and at the end, weather, emotion, and no realistic opportunity to redo anything. The look itself is rarely the problem. Longevity is.
Where it fails, in order
- Base around the nose and chin, by the third hour
- Eye makeup in the crease, especially in heat
- Lip colour, which goes first and is noticed most
- Under the eyes, where concealer settles into every line by the evening
Build for the finish, not the start
Skin first, and give it time — this is the one day worth applying skincare a full ten minutes before base rather than straight underneath it. Base that goes on well over settled skin stays put; base over damp moisturiser is already migrating by the ceremony.
Use less base than feels right and build only where you need it. Coverage fails by moving, and a thin layer has less to move. Set the centre panel and leave the rest.
The eyes
Primer, or a matte shade pressed into the socket before anything else goes on. Waterproof mascara, without exception — it is a wedding, and the question is when rather than whether. Skip anything glittery in the crease; it travels furthest.
The lips
Line the whole lip, not just the edge, so that when the colour on top goes there is still shape underneath. Blot, reapply, blot again. Gloss looks best in the first photographs and worst in all the others.
The two things worth carrying
Blotting papers and the lip. Not a compact, not a full kit — powder over shine at hour six cakes, blotting does not, and nobody has ever regretted having their lipstick in a bag.
