Why your skin looks different in every mirror

A face looks clear at home, tired in a lift, sallow in an office and completely different again in a changing room. Nothing about the skin has changed in the twenty minutes between. What changed is the light, and skin is unusually sensitive to it.

Colour temperature

Warm bulbs — the yellow ones most people have at home — add gold to everything. They flatter, and they hide redness, which is why makeup applied under them often looks under-corrected in daylight. Cool white light does the opposite: it pulls out blue and grey and makes any shadow under the eye look deeper than it is.

Direction

Light from above, which is what almost every ceiling gives you, drops shadow into everything that is not flat: under the eyes, under the nose, under the lip, along the jaw. That is why lifts and public bathrooms are so unkind. Light from in front, at face height, fills those shadows instead of casting them.

Colour rendering

Cheap LEDs render some colours badly, and skin is one of the hardest things to render well. Under a low-CRI bulb, red and orange collapse towards brown, so a healthy flush reads as a patch of dullness.

Which light to trust

Indirect daylight, from in front of you, with nothing strongly coloured behind you. A window on an overcast day is close to ideal. Direct sun is not — it is bright enough to blow out texture and hard enough to cast the same shadows a ceiling light does.

Any honest read of skin from a photograph is a read of the skin as it was lit. This is not a limitation to be engineered away; it is a fact about photographs.
